SIGNAL DESIGN ENGINEER

Signal design engineers perform the following work: design work for railroad signals, shop drawing review, design support during construction including inspection of newly installed signal systems, centralized train control equipment, speed control systems, and/or related electrical plant, machinery and apparatus, and other related work.

Level A

  • A high school diploma and 8 years experience in railroad signal engineering, maintenance, circuit design, manufacturing or installation. Or a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 4 years railroad signal experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of a major transit signal system. The ability to work independently in all conventional aspects of signaling. As a fully competent engineer, plans and conducts work independently based on general instructions. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex work and supervisory approval on other work.
  • The ability to write clearly, organize project information and daily reports. Conducts or oversees breakdown or operational testing. Interacts and communicates with contractors.

Level B

  • A high school diploma and 10 years experience in railroad signal engineering, maintenance, circuit design, manufacturing or installation. Or a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 6 years railroad signal experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of a major transit signal system. The ability to use advanced techniques and extend the theories and precepts of railroad signaling to novel or unusual circumstances. Applies sound and diversified knowledge of signaling. Makes independent judgments on engineering problems and methods. Requires supervisory guidance only on the general project objectives, unusual problems and developments.
  • The ability to write clearly, organize project information and daily reports. Conducts or oversees breakdown or operational testing. Interacts and communicates with contractors.

Level C

  • A high school diploma and 12 years experience in railroad signal engineering, maintenance, circuit design, manufacturing or installation. Or a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 8 years railroad signal experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of a major transit signal system. The ability to use advanced techniques. Proficient at extending the theories and precepts of railroad signaling to novel or unusual circumstances. Plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems. Assignments are given in terms of broad objectives and limits.
  • Maintains liaison with individuals within company or other organizations as required. Responsible for acting independently on technical matters.
  • The ability to write clearly, organize project information and daily reports. Conducts or oversees breakdown or operational testing. Interacts and communicates with contractors.

Level D

  • A high school diploma and 14 years experience in railroad signal engineering, maintenance, circuit design, manufacturing or installation. Or a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 10 years railroad signal experience. Registration as a licensed professional engineer may be required. However, extensive experience may be substituted in lieu of licensing.
  • Thorough knowledge of a major transit signal system. The ability to use advanced techniques. Proficient at extending the theories and precepts of railroad signaling to novel or unusual circumstances. Makes decisions and recommendations that are considered authoritative on issues that have an extensive impact. Negotiates critical issues and is recognized as an authority in the field.
  • Initiates and maintains extensive contacts with key engineers and management. Possesses skills in the art of persuasion and negotiation of key issues.
  • Possesses the ability to write clearly, organize project information and daily reports. Conducts or oversees breakdown or operational testing. Interacts and communicates with contractors.

Level E

  • A Bachelor s degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 10 years railroad signal experience, including five years in a supervisory capacity. Registration as a licensed professional engineer is a generally required. However, extensive experience may be substituted in lieu of licensing.
  • Thorough knowledge of a major transit signal system. The ability to use advanced techniques. Proficient at extending the theories and precepts of railroad signaling to novel or unusual circumstances. Makes decisions and recommendations that are considered authoritative on issues that have an extensive impact. Negotiates critical issues. Individuals at this level must demonstrate a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in activities of significant importance and are recognized as authority in the field.
  • Possesses the ability to write clearly, organize project information and daily reports. Must be able to write management reports and recommend the approval of signal line drawings. Conducts or oversee breakdown or operational testing. Interacts and communicates with contractors and internal departments.

Level F

  • A Bachelor s degree in electrical engineering or a related field and 12 years railroad signal experience, including 7 years in a supervisory capacity. Registration as a licensed professional engineer is a generally required. However, extensive experience may be substituted in lieu of licensing.
  • Thorough knowledge of a major transit signal system. The ability to use advanced techniques. Proficient at extending the theories and precepts of railroad signaling to novel or unusual circumstances. Makes decisions and recommendations that are considered authoritative on issues that have an extensive impact. Negotiates critical issues. Individuals at this level must demonstrate a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in activities of significant importance and are recognized as authority in the field.

Possesses the ability to write clearly, organize project information and daily reports. Must be able to write management reports and recommend the approval of signal line drawings. Conducts or oversee breakdown or operational testing. Interacts and communicates with contractors.
